The Future of Digital Fabric Printing in India!

Digital printing on fabric is in demand nowadays. Fabric printing can be understood as the process of applying various colored patterns as well as designs onto fabric. One or more colors are applied on the different parts of the fabric.

Difference between Dyeing and Printing!

At first glance, the process of dyeing and printing seem similar. In an appropriately printed fabric, the colors are usually affixed to the fiber. This is done to avoid any effect while washing or friction. Dyeing is also similar to printing but it involves dyeing the entire fabric with one color. While in printing, repeated patterns are printed on a certain part or all over the fabric.

Old Era of Printing!

In the 19th century, ink-jet printers were available for a variety of paper printing applications. The technology has progressed with time. It is developing so rapidly that now there are many big companies which have started manufacturing specialized digital printing machines. These machines can ease off a variety of substrates- from paper to canvas, to vinyl or fabric. This is how digital printing on fabric started.

Digital Printing on Fabric!

Digital fabric printing is known as the act of printing digital files onto fabric which is done by using ink jet based printers. Digital printing is a new process that includes printing a design, an image or a pattern directly from the computer onto the required media. It is done using a large format printing machine or an ink-jet printer.
There are two successful methods of digital printing; sublimation digital printing and direct digital printing. The technology behind both is same but the media and the process vary in both methods.

Variety of Fabrics Used!

The fabric is basically a three-dimensional structure. The ink and hues may vary to a greater extent. Though it has few practical limitations exist on the fabrics which make it slow and little expensive yet adopting this method ensures reducing sampling costs and time.
A recent research revealed that cotton is the most used fabric for this type of printing. Cotton is followed by a mix of polyester and cotton. Other types of fabrics like silk, wool, and polyacrylic also play a minor role. Cotton is used because of its good wash ability. While using dark fabrics, a special pre-treatment is required to make the ink hold well with the fabric which takes place prior to printing.

Digital Textile printing - The Printing of Next Generation

Textile printing has been around with us from centuries. It’s an ancient art that gave colors to fabric years ago. From the early years to till date, textile printing has taken various transformations. The components used, method of printing, the area of use, this all has been modified. Though, the whole technology has taken a new look, the oldest technology is still in use in some areas. One thing which is same as before is the objective. Textile printing aims to provide high-quality product with an artistic design printed on them.

Textile printing transformation

•  Textile printing started with block printing which is also known as relief printing. In this process, dye is pressed onto the fabric from a wooden block engraved with the design to be printed. This process is quite simple, at the same time, it consumes a lot of time.

•  After block printing, roller printing came as its successor. In this process, continuous roll of fabric is placed inside a rotating cylinder and being pressed by number of rollers. These rollers, each of different color, are engraved with design patterns to be printed. Roller printing or cylinder printing is quite fast as compared to block printing and hence increases the efficiency.

•  With the beginning of 20th Century, Screen Printing was introduced. Screen printing includes a stencil of images, each of different color, attached on a screen (usually made of silk). Then, ink is pushed on the screen with the help of rollers. This stencil technique covers a wide range of designs to be printed on the fabric. Stencil is the heart of screen printing as it is the source of imprinted designs.

•   After this, the most popular printing technique came into force i.e. Digital Textile Printing. The use of digital media for images, versatility of physical material on which printing is to be done, speed, accuracy and flexibility has made this printing completely different from traditional textile printing. This is the reason why Digital Printing is considered to be the next generation printing technique.

Digital Textile Printing

Digital Textile Printing refers to the use of digital media for the images to be printed upon the textile. Unlike the previous techniques, this does not require any intermediate steps of printing onto paper first and then to the fabric. In this printing, a digital based image is directly printed to a variety of media like paper, plastic card or fabric. It uses dye sublimation printer for this whole process. Once you are done with the designs, print it on fabric through the dye sublimation printer. This is just like a normal paper printing.

How it works

First of all, the design to be printed is made in the computer using software (usually Adobe Photoshop).  A single block of the design is repeated multiple times according to the need to make a full design. Once the design is ready, the second step starts i.e. printing. A dye sublimation printer is used in the next step. This printer is directly connected to the same computer in which design have been made.  It uses heat to transfer dye on to textiles (or other materials) and hence employs the printing process.

As there are no additional steps between the two ends, this technique saves a lot of time. This makes it cost-effective too. But there is one requirement which is to be fulfilled before the printing process i.e. pre-treatment of fabric. The fabric on which printing is to be done is pre-treated with ink. This is done to check the ink holding capacity of the fabric. If fabric fails to do so, printing does not start.

Digital Textile Printing – Types

Digital printing covers multiple areas of our day to day life. From cotton to polyester, each fabric can be printed effectively using this technique. Here is a list of various types of digital textile printing

From bed sheets to the tiny dress accessories they wear, all can take a different and unique look with beautiful prints.

Polyester is one of the most challenging fabrics to work upon. Its heat sensitivity capacity is quite high because of which it shrinks when subjected to high degree of temperature. Digital textile printing covers this challenging fabric too. Dresses, Cushions, Curtains made up of polyester can also be printed with this technique.

Advantages of Digital Textile Printing

Cost-effective: A computer, printer and dye are the major components of digital printing which reduces the extra cost.

Saves time: Digital printing directly prints on the fabric hence eliminates the intermediate steps in between, this technique saves time.

Flexible: Designs can be managed from the remote locations too. This makes it flexible to use among customers.

Environment friendly: It is much cleaner and safer to use than the traditional methods of textile printing. This feature makes it environment-friendly.

Digital Textile Printing has given a boom to the printing industry. It has become so popular among users that at present, it is holding almost half of the print market shares. Due to the reduced cost and business growth, it has become the top investment priority among professionals.

All such factors have contributed to the rapid growth of Digital textile printing.

Digital Textile Printing Vs. Screen Textile Printing

The art of textile printing dates back to centuries ago, ever since mankind discovered the aesthetic difference that could be brought about to fabrics through printing. Over the years, many diverse methods of textile printing have been introduced, and broadly speaking today, the choice is between digital textile printing and the relatively more traditional screen printing. Let’s have a look at the factors that can help make a decision between the two methods, depending upon the needs of the business:

Quality: Generally speaking, it is felt that the quality of imaging offered by screen printing is superior to that given by digital printing. This is due to the method applied, which necessitates the ink to be absorbed deeply and therefore more long-lasting. Images tend to be sharper due to the stencils used, and do not fade soon.

Variety of colors to be used: In this aspect, digital screen printing has a definite edge over screen printing. This is because it allows the use of several colors in a single image, unlike screen printing, which requires separate screens for separate colors. So if the order calls for vibrant, colorful imagery to be printed, digital printing is the way to go.

Time & tools: Screen printing is a far more time-consuming process than digital textile printing. This is again due to the fact that it needs separate screens to be prepared and then used. The procedure requires the usage of stencils that are made with the help of an image or photograph, then placing these over the surface where the printing is to be carried out and then spreading the ink. Digital printing, on the other hand, requires just a computer, printer and ink cartridges for getting the job done, thereby significantly reducing the time period involved in this.

Volume of print quantity: Screen printing is typically very well-suited for large print volumes and has a minimum order quantity. That’s why it continues to be extremely popular whenever consistent, high-quality imagery is required in bulk. Digital printing, on the other hand, is perfect for smaller print orders, which can even be a single item at a time.

Customization: Simply put, screen printing does not have any provision for customization. This is where digital printing offers a big advantage, since it can actually enable tailor-made printing according to one’s design requirements. The colors that can be used are practically unlimited. Photographs and high-resolution imagery also show up beautifully in digital prints.

Cost-effectiveness: Screen printing involves more capital cost than digital printing due to the machinery needed. However, this is thought to offer great return on investment because of the fact that large print orders are enabled by screen printing, and the cost of maintaining the equipment is not too high. Digital printing requires more expensive inks, and while there isn’t much initial setup cost involved, it does not allow economies of scale to be derived. Smaller print quantities, often with a higher degree of customization, require higher running expenses. So it really is about considering what combination of the above factors is important for a particular printing assignment, before reaching a decision.
